Drag-and-Drop Programming: From Dreamweaver to AI-Generated UIs
In 2014, I answered a question on Stack Overflow in Portuguese about the pros and cons of visual, drag-and-drop programming. It scored 5 upvotes — a discussion that every developer had an opinion on, usually a strong one.
My answer acknowledged the tradeoffs. But I’ll admit the tone carried an assumption that most of us shared back then: visual builders were for beginners, and “real” developers wrote code.
That assumption aged poorly.
The 2014 Perspective: Toys for Non-Programmers
In 2014, “drag-and-drop programming” meant specific things:
- Dreamweaver — Adobe’s visual HTML editor that generated notoriously messy markup
- Visual Studio’s Windows Forms designer — drag buttons onto a canvas, double-click to add event handlers
- Access databases — build forms and reports visually, with VBA glued underneath
- WordPress page builders — early versions of Elementor, WPBakery, generating shortcode soup
The arguments against them were consistent:
- Generated code was terrible — Dreamweaver’s HTML was full of nested tables, inline styles, and proprietary attributes
- Limited customization — you could build the 80% case visually, but the last 20% required fighting the tool
- No version control — visual builder output was binary or unreadable XML, making collaboration and diffs impossible
- Performance — visual builders generated bloated output because they optimized for flexibility, not efficiency
- Learning ceiling — you’d learn the tool, not the fundamentals. When the tool couldn’t do something, you were stuck
These criticisms were valid. I stood by them. A developer who understood HTML, CSS, and JavaScript would always outperform someone dragging widgets in Dreamweaver.
But the question wasn’t wrong. It was early.
What Changed: Visual Building Got Serious
The shift happened gradually, then all at once. Three things converged:
1. The Tools Got Better
Webflow proved that a visual builder could generate clean, semantic HTML and CSS. Not shortcode soup. Not nested tables. Actual production-quality code that developers wouldn’t be embarrassed to view-source.
Figma blurred the line from the design side. Designers started creating components with auto-layout, constraints, and variants — essentially programming layout logic without writing code. Figma-to-code plugins turned design files into React components.
Retool and Appsmith targeted internal tools — the admin dashboards and CRUD interfaces that developers build reluctantly. Drag-and-drop for a customer-facing marketing site? Debatable. Drag-and-drop for an internal ops dashboard that three people use? That’s just being pragmatic.
2. AI Entered the Conversation
This is where the 2014 framing broke completely.
v0.dev by Vercel lets you describe a UI in plain language and generates React components. Cursor and Claude Code write entire features from descriptions. GitHub Copilot autocompletes visual layouts in real-time.
Is “describe what you want and AI builds it” drag-and-drop programming? Not literally, but it’s the same fundamental proposition: build UIs without manually writing every line. The mechanism shifted from dragging widgets to describing intent, but the outcome is identical — less manual code for standard patterns.
3. The Professional Developer Started Using Them
This is the real shift. In 2014, visual tools were associated with beginners and non-technical founders. In 2026, senior engineers use Retool for internal dashboards, Webflow for marketing sites, and AI assistants for scaffolding components.
The stigma dissolved because the economics forced it. When you can ship an internal tool in two hours with Retool versus two weeks with a custom React app, the “real developers write code” argument loses to the “real developers ship solutions” argument.
What I’d Say Differently Today
My 2014 answer listed legitimate tradeoffs. Here’s how they’ve evolved:
Generated code quality — Webflow and modern builders generate clean output. This criticism no longer applies universally.
Limited customization — Still true, but the ceiling rose dramatically. Webflow supports custom CSS and JavaScript. Retool has a scripting layer. The 80/20 rule shifted to 95/5.
Version control — Some tools now export to code. Webflow has a code export. Figma plugins generate versioned component files. Not perfect, but not the black box it was.
Performance — Tools like Builder.io optimize output aggressively. Some generate static HTML that outperforms hand-written React SPAs.
Learning ceiling — This is the one criticism I’d still make. If you only know the visual tool, you’re limited to what the visual tool can do. Understanding the underlying platform (HTML, CSS, JS, HTTP) remains valuable because it lets you debug, extend, and choose the right tool for each problem.
The New Question
The 2014 question was: “Is visual programming real programming?”
The 2026 question is: “When is visual programming faster?”
And the answer is: more often than most of us expected. For standard CRUD interfaces, marketing pages, landing pages, internal dashboards, email templates, and form-heavy workflows — visual or AI-assisted building is often the pragmatic choice.
For custom interactions, complex state management, performance-critical rendering, and novel UI patterns — writing code is still necessary and probably always will be.
The Takeaway
The question shifted from “is visual programming real?” to “when is visual programming faster?” The tools earned their place not by replacing developers but by handling the repetitive parts that senior engineers never wanted to build manually anyway. My 2014 answer was right about the tradeoffs of that era. But the tools evolved faster than any of us predicted, and the developers who adapted — using visual builders where they make sense and code where it matters — are shipping faster than purists on either side.
